Overview - Estate of Mr. Bailey Johnson v Horizons Nursing Home

In 1997 and 1998, Mr. Bailey Johnson lived at Horizons Nursing Home. He was unsteady when he walked and had a history of falling while living at Horizons.

In late 1998, Mr. Johnson fell while walking to the restroom. He was taken to the Hospital and diagnosed with a hip fracture. He had hip surgery at the Hospital and was transferred back to Horizons Nursing Home.

Because he had had hip surgery, Mr. Johnson was required to stay in bed for a period of time to recuperate. As a result of being in bed for extended periods of time, he developed several bed sores, including one on his right heel. The bed sore on his heel became so infected that he had to have his right leg amputated below the knee. Mr. Johnson died shortly after the amputation.

Mr. Johnson’s family sued Horizons Nursing Home for negligence and wrongful death.
